Russian construction data

The Russian construction industry bottomed out in mid-2009 and a slowdown in the rate at which the market has declined has been observed since that time. Nonetheless, for the whole of 2009, after five consecutive years in which a growth of more than 10% was recorded, the market contracted by more than 13% in real terms. This was followed by a 0.6% decrease in 2010.

Since September 2008 and throughout 2009, those residential buildings which were started in 2008 and 2007 continued to be completed. Thanks to this, up until November last year there was only a slight drop in housing construction completion in Russia. However, in December – the month in which traditionally almost 30% of housing completions in the given year is registered – a 22.5% slump in housing completion was recorded. This contributed to a 6.7% fall in residential construction for the whole of 2009, the first drop recorded in the decade, which was followed by a 3% decline in 2010.

In 2008, the total floor space of non-residential buildings completed fell by 281,100 m2, i.e. by 1.2%, in comparison with 2007. In 2009, this figure decreased by 3%, with the steepest fall observed in the construction of healthcare buildings. The majority of the decline was accounted for by the sharp decline of over 25% observed in Q4. However, the total number and total volume of buildings built in 2009 increased in comparison with the previous year. 2010 saw a significant decline in the total number, total volume and total floor space of buildings built.

In response to shrinking demand, producers of building materials were forced to scale down production in 2009. Production of panels and structures for the construction of mass housing and prefabricated wooden houses fell by half during the course of last year. During the same period, production of ferroconcrete structures, sand, crushed stone, gravel and wallbuilding materials was down 35-40%. Production of the most fundamental building material, cement, fell 17%. In contrast float glass production rose by 12%. In 2010, production of building materials in Russia resumed growth.
